I am making a 3 layer chocolate cake with chocolate icing for a friend. They want to pay me for it but I dont know what to charge them.
What does a bakery normally charge?
It is just a standard 9″ round cake.
And as far as true friends etc. They insist on paying me for it.

i dont know how much it costs… but i would never take money from a friend if i make a cake for them.

If they are good friends they will find a way to show you how they appreciate you… if you take money from them you will show them how little you appreciate them….

There’s Never Too Much Chocolate Cake

There can be no greater way to spend an evening or weekend afternoon than baking and decorating a cake. The repetition creates an almost hypnotic state, whilst the promise of a tasty treat later engages the brain’s pleasure system. 

For most chefs, the baking part is simple enough, as there are hundreds of recipes for all varieties of cake to be found online and in cook-books, and it’s usually the decorating part that stumps people. Most fruit based cakes can be topped with a simple layer of brown sugar to give that crisp baked look, so it’s down to the chocolate based cakes to be decorated with love and care. This article aims to give some tips for chocolate cake decoration.

Firstly, take into consideration what kind of chocolate your cake is made from. Chocolate comes in three main varieties – milk, dark and plain. It’s a generally accepted rule not to mix types on a cake, as the contrast in texture and flavors can ruin the overall taste of the cake. Milk chocolate tends to be very sweet and smooth, dark chocolate is much bitterer and coarser, whilst plain usually falls somewhere in the middle, being rich in flavor and fairly smooth. Whichever type you’ve used in the cake batter, you will need extra to make the icing.

Chocolate cake decorationcan be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. You can buy pre-made icing which you can scoop out and spread on, but this tends to have a shop bought flavor, and none of personalized touches that homemade icing brings you.

To make a simple liquid icing, mix some icing sugar with water until it becomes quite runny -runnier than you would make regular icing. Melt some chocolate in a bain marie (i.e. in a bowl suspended over boiling water), and mix it into the icing. This will make quite a thick paste, but one of the most delicious ones around. Be sure to spread it thinly on the cake, as a thick layer will be too sickly sweet for most cakes. Interesting patterns can be made by mixing cream into the mixture and swirling in. When this is spread on the cake, a marbling effect can be created.

More complex decorations can include fondant shapes, candy and piped icing to spell out words. Think carefully about whom the cake is for, and their interests.

Help!! I just ate too much, what should I do?

Okay so ive been trying SO hard to lose these last 5 pounds by Halloween…

ive been doing really good, very low fat and low calorie diet, but high in protein

anyways, i just pigged out horribly. i just ate 10 chicken wings (500 calories) half a box of Debbie cakes (800 calories) and a HUGE bowl of ice cream with a TON of chocolate syrup (400 calories)

i ate so much i felt sick, like i was about to throw up. those chicken wings tasted like pure fat and it was disgusting but i ate them all anyways.

i was wondering what i should do?? i dont want my body to store all that fat!! i ate about 3 hours ago and i still feel SO gross…

i plan on going to the gym like every day for 1 or 2 hours…. should i go to the gym for an extra 2 hours? maybe extra 3 hours? should i go for a walk right now?? (its almost midnight)

im thinking about doing a fast or master cleanse of some sort….

btw, im a 20 year old female, 5’2 and 117 pounds… i want to be 112 like i was in high school hehe

I dont have a gag reflex, and actually ive got somewhat of a germaphobic/paranoia of throwing up. ive thrown up like once in my whole life, when i was in kindergarten. i remember how horrified i felt, and never did it again, ever.

How much should I charge someone for cookies, pies, cakes?

On Thanksgiving, I did 3 different types of cookies, rice krispie treats and an apple blueberry pie that apparently the pie and the cookies were “amaaaaaaaaaaaazing.” My sister wants me to make her one and she’d buy all the ingredients (im not charging her if she does that because she’s my sister). My boyfriend’s father had a whole pie to himself (I made him one for Thanksgiving before we left to my aunt’s) and said it was greaaaaaaaaaat. My Aunt loved the pie and so did everyone else – said it tasted like entenmans and the cookies we’re amaaazing too… she even had left over pb cookies i made and gave them to her clients and they said they loooooved them. With this all being said, my Aunt thinks i should bake and do a small out of home baking thing. How do I figure out how much to charge someone for these desserts? And how do I pack them if I have to mail them somewhere? My coworker’s sister’s friend wants me to fedex to him cookies to compare with my coworker’s cookies – and I guess he’s willing to pay whatever I think I’m worth – and the fed ex too… but how do you figure it out? Labor, price per dozen or per cookie, how? I don’t want to charge too little or too much you know? Cakes I make are usually chocolate with peanut butter drizzled over it, or vanilla cake with chocolate chips, chocolate icing and coconut on top, or whatever really… and in all honesty, the first pie I made was this apple blueberry pie for thanksgiving – my aunt says I have real talent I shouldn’t just let go to waste. My concern is I don’t want to go into classes/courses for bakery – which I know you don’t necessarily have to if you keep it small…. My cookies are usually “mini” – was thinking of if I expand to a big big business, “Mandables” as in mandibles and mand is in amanda – my name – or “mandles” mini mandles…somethin, but that’s not important right now…just concerned on how to price and charge people where I get a little profit in the end and not just “break even”… :) Thanks everyone and no negative comments please!! I must have had two big dinner portions(steak potatos,salad, chicken breast, cabbage) then atleast like 10 cakes, and a bag of chips, a box of turtles chocolates, christmas cookies, a couple beers, a pepsi, I FEEL FATTTTTTTTTTTTT LOL

Is this to much, its just its thanksgiving….?

I tried not to eat to much for dinner:

Breakfast- 1 banana (100 cals)

Lunch- 1 cheese stick (80 cals)
1 pear (90 cals)

Snack- 1 apple (70 cals)

And here is the big thanksgiving dinner:

1/2 medium acorn squash which i cooked with no oils or anything (110 calories)

a small portion of yams (90 calories)
and this is the zinger. My brother insisted on making cheese stuffed chicken breast. You put cheese on chicken breast and then roll it up. He put ricotta and mozerella cheese and they weren’t even low fat! He also put seasonings and olive oil.
1 piece has 1/2 chicken breast, 2 tb ricotta cheese, and a little slice of mozerella. I tried to take most of the cheese out. I’d say that one piece was 300 cals???

but now I’m going to my great god mothers house and we always HAVE to have dessert. Its either I ate pumpkin pie, chocolate cake, apple pie, or vanilla frosted cake.

How much caffeine is in a small/medium piece of chocolate cake?

I do not consume caffeine anymore (it’s been about 8 years or so). I just ate a small/medium sized piece of chocolate cake. I wonder if anyone has a clue about how much caffeine would be in that? By the way, I do not eat/drink caffeine anymore due to panic disorder and anticipatory anxiety disorders. Thanks for your input.
I also take Xanax, Buspar and Lexapro and have heard/read caffeine is not good to mix with these drugs. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with consuming caffeine and any of these medications together?
